Find Yourself With Us: The Birth of Bindi Yoga

Greeting Yogis!

For those of you that do not know me, my name is Michelle Marshall, co-owner of Bindi Yoga. I was born in Washington state in 1988 which makes me currently 27 years old. I was raised by my mother Susan (who teaches yoga like me) and my father Gary (who doesn't do yoga but I still love him!). I attended a normal school with normal friends and lived in a normal neighborhood.

So exciting right? At this point you are probably thinking this is another boring blog by a 20 something year old yoga girl that thinks she can write. You would be correct. Except the boring part of course! I have never been the type of girl to have the best introductions into anything and can get nervous about new endeavors just like anyone else. But this journey into the blogging world has been something I have dreamed of entering into for years now, and I think I can do it if you have faith in me...so here I am world!

So what is this blog supposed to be about anyways? Why should other people read the stuff that I and other yogis write on here?

This blog was created to be  fun and unfiltered, deeply rooted yet light and easy to read, experience and advice writing space. Writers will come from those at Bindi Yoga and outside the studio willing to open up and let out their shit. Yes I said it. SHIT. When I say shit, I mean it in two different ways. The good shit that we inhale and the bad shit that we exhale. This is a place for myself and other fellow yogis to write about the good and the bad so that we can share with others that can reflect and learn from us. This is not a place for anyone to vent, let me make that clear. It is a place for reflection and insight. This is also a place to get awesome yoga advice and to create the healthiest and most fun and active way to live in the pacific northwest (If you know me well, I have a lot to say on health and happiness!).

So let's start with a little bit more about me so that you can get a glimpse on my yoga journey shall we?

Not that long ago I started my yoga journey. When I was in high school, I decided to take a few yoga classes here and there with my mother. We started taking classes at a local hot yoga studio and I ended up there close to everyday to get my yoga fix. I was hooked! I couldn't get enough of the heat, and I loved how I felt after each class. I started thinking that I could live and breathe yoga everyday for the rest of my life. And I did just that.

So let's skip ahead. Basically the short version of my journey was:
1. I fell in love with yoga.
2. I figured out how to become an instructor.
3. I went to training. Susan and I received our 200hr RYT through YogaWorks.
4. BAM! I was certified (and terrified for the next step!)

Now, we had two options: Work for someone else or work for ourselves. It is really hard for us to be led and so we knew we wanted to lead the project on building our own little Lynnwood, WA yoga studio. There was a deep fire burning inside of us to build this baby up from the ground that we couldn't ignore. We also wanted a space that students could come to that wasn't going to cost them an arm and a leg. One of the reasons I didn't get the chance to practice as much as I wanted to during teacher training was because the dues of being a studio yogi were too freakin' high! Paying $100+ per month to take classes was not tangible for me for most of my life. I kept thinking that yoga was for everyone...well except it is only for everyone if you have more then a little bit of cash. Let me step back for a minute and tell you that I know I could have practiced at home and paid close to nothing for YouTube videos or DVDs. But if you are a yogi, you know that having an "at home practice" can be extremely hard to find. I still have a hard time hunkering down and getting rid of distractions to practice at home and I have been practicing for over 10 years! So for those of you suffering to find an at home practice, I feel ya!

Let's get back on track. Susan and I wanted to develop a plan and a space that more students could grow their yoga practice without the financial pain of heavy monthly dues. I still remember the day we FINALLY found the ground zero for our studio. As soon as we walked in, we didn't need to be shown around. I think we both knew that this was it and we started planning where walls would go up, what colors we were going to use and just about everything else. Within months our studio was up and running with a full schedule, amazing instructors and the beginning of a long term business partner in crime.

This is now a huge part of my life that has given me many ups and downs over the past almost five years we have been in business. I basically live at the studio and breath yoga everyday. So now what you may ask. Well, this blog...

Ever since Bindi Yoga (Fun fact: Bindi was the name of Michelle's pit bull!) opened in 2011, I have always wanted to find more ways to give back to our yoga community for all they have done for Susan and I. My intention with this blog is to not only educate but to reflect on the teachers, yogis and the world around us. The journey of others can be very insightful for our own wellbeing. If we can listen to the underlying messages from others own "shit", then maybe we will be able to listen to the insightful messages in ourselves that we sometimes hide and bury away forever.

CONCLUSION OF THE MOMENT: YOUR LIFE IS EVER EVOLVING THANKS TO THE PEOPLE AND PLACES THAT FADE IN AND FADE OUT OF YOUR LIFE EVERYDAY. LISTEN TO THE MESSAGES THAT ARE UNDERNEATH IT ALL!

Come with me on my blogging journey to connect yourself with others in/out of Bindi Yoga to discover and reflect on their experiences, advice and views on just about everything yoga and not yoga related. Let's free ourselves of the shackles that hold us down from really diving into ourselves and discover a whole new person from within! Gain some wisdom and of course have fun with us!

A new blog for yourself...a new you to discover.
